My name is Diogo Chaves, a Portuguese composer working in film, tv, games and media in the UK. I recently graduated from NFTS in the Masters of Composition, and I also hold a MA in Sound Design from UCP in Portugal.
My passion for music stems from a very young age, when I started playing piano. This same passion became intertwined with film from the start, when hearing all the amazing soundtracks of films and tv series ever since I can remember. As I developed, so did my taste in music and film, which created in me a will to be a part of the storytelling process in those same films I used to watch as a kid.
However, in Portugal I couldn’t get into the music for the screen area since it’s very limited. So, to keep close to the industry I love, I decided to do a MA in Sound Design, in the hopes I could tap into the music industry someday. After doing sound design for shorts and some composition for those same short films, I realised that I was ready for more and to really learn the ways of storytelling through music. That happened in 2023 when I was accepted into the NFTS and I had the opportunity to compose, conduct and record a lot of soundtracks for some amazing films. I had the privilege to have worked on films selected for festivals like The Grierson Awards, the British Short Film Awards and the Student Academy Awards. And I was also the winner of the best soundtrack awards in the 48h Film Project Lisbon and an honourable mention at the Reale Film Festival.
I had the opportunity to record my music at AIR Studios in London and two of my graduation films in Budapest with the Budapest Art Orchestra that I had the privilege to conduct. All my compositions have also been produced, mixed and mastered by me, as I acquired a lot of this knowledge in my years as a sound designer and as an up-and-coming composer.
I have a deep passion for music and composition for the screen. I am self taught in a lot of things related to music, and search inspiration in everything in order to fuel the hunger I possess to learn more everyday.
