As someone at the beginning of their production music journey, I am really excited to come across this opportunity via PRS. My name is Freya Roy, I’m an artist, multi-instrumentalist, producer and mixer, and my journey into composing has been nothing short of eventful. I began my mission as a solo artist at the age of 14 in Norwich and around East Anglia, self-producing; gigging and developing my craft as a guitarist and songwriter in a wholesome and nurturing live music community, building my foundation as a musician. With a desire to hone in on my skills as a player, I went on to study Jazz Guitar at Birmingham Conservatoire before my world began to change. Just months into my studies, a wrist injury snowballed into a health diagnosis and I spent the next 10 years learning and re-discovering how I can continue to work in music.
Though it’s been a tumultuous experience, surrendering to certain elements of live music, I have been able to discover my love for composing and my strengths as a producer for other independent artists. In 2022, I was funded by Arts Council England for my project ‘Becoming a Mix Engineer’, with my efforts focused on creating a sustainable work environment and a career with longevity. This was a life changing opportunity which has uplifted my every creative outlet and harnessed my ability as a writer, leading to multiple releases under my own name (recognised by the likes of Clash Magazine, COLORS, Record of the Day, alongside Spotify editorial playlisting), as well collaborations with many UK artists including Maya Law (TLD Records); Gabriel Gifford (Psychotic Reaction), Nia Wyn, Kindelan, and Mared. The biggest addition has been meeting the team at Audio Network with whom I have just finished a bespoke EP project in collaboration with Maya Law (due to be released later this year), my first body of work in production music, and a second project has just begun. With a keen ear for bespoke composition and sound design, I have started to collaborate with DLMDD and I have been developing my relationship with InHand London with a view to contribute to a library in the near future. I really look forward to soundtracking and contributing to creative campaigns when these opportunities arise. Joining the Alliance of Women Film Composers has also been an inspiring step into this world of music.
Being considered for the Composer Spotlight Award would be a huge step into the industry for me as a female composer/producer. The difficulties being seen and recognised in this area has been particularly challenging. This award is an amazing opportunity for my work and potential to be in the ears of seasoned professionals and reputable names in the field, making valuable connections, as well as a chance to develop and nurture my network of fellow composers.
I look forward to you checking out my work – a varied portfolio of my skills throughout my time in the music industry but an insight into my journey as a composer. Thank you for your consideration and I look forward to hearing from you.
Best
Freya Roy
