My name is Jolene Khor and I’m a Malaysian-born composer based in the UK, creating music for film, games, tabletop storytelling, and live performance. My works are rooted in narrative and emotion, often blending orchestration and instrumentation of East and West with imaginative textures. My recent piece Altheya: The Dragon Empire, composed for HighRollers DnD, won Best Instrumental of the Year by a Musician in the TTRPG Space at the 2024 CRIT Awards. It has garnered over 200,000 streams across all platforms, with listeners describing it as “deeply moving,” “cinematic and powerful,” and “a theme that gave the campaign a soul.” I continue to compose for HighRollers DnD, as well as Nomnivore Games, actual play podcasts (The Writer’s Room: 7th Sea, DistalsPlace, The Storyteller Squad), and indie games like The Gods Fabled: Soil Frontier.I’ve scored award-winning short films including Kung Fu Scriptures (Best Music Composer, Tokyo Film Awards 2022), Kung Fu Grandma, APATHY, and WALLS, and my orchestral concert work Journey was recorded at Abbey Road Studios with musicians from the Royal College of Music. Other scoring credits include Sinaran Lapok, Back and Forth, The Last Blue Rose, SQOK, and children’s media like My Dental Debut and Felix and Mouse: The Simple Things.Outside composing, I’ve conducted ensembles for scoring sessions and was invited to conduct the Queen Charlotte Orchestra at Netflix’s live concert in Covent Garden (2023). I also work as a pianist and arranger for vocalists.Being considered for the Composer Spotlight Award would be a meaningful step in sharing my voice as a Southeast Asian composer working internationally. I’m passionate about creating music that connects deeply with people across genres and storytelling platforms. I believe the Composer Spotlight Award would not only celebrate my work, but also help amplify my voice and heritage as a composer working across global storytelling platforms. My path has involved carving out space in both concert halls and streaming worlds, bridging games, film, and tabletop roleplay with music that is emotionally rich and culturally mindful. I want to keep telling stories that resonate, especially in spaces where diverse perspectives are still emerging. This recognition would help me continue creating and reaching audiences who see themselves in these worlds too.
