My composing journey began in isolation. Growing up in Suffolk without friends who were interested in music as I was, writing music was an outlet for my ideas and impressions of the world. I began with classical piano lessons, ventured into teaching myself concepts around jazz, and settled on exploring the realm of music production. Being able to realise musical ideas was more important to me than repertoire, so I have been establishing myself as a producer and composer – someone who capture ideas and writes them.
I like to explore a variety of genres as both a writer and producer. Recently, I have been curating a microcosm of my influences – electronic, ambient, cinematic, jazz, popular music – by improvising on the piano live with an effects pedal, as a study on how performers respond to textural changes with their instrument. I have also continued to work with different songwriters, artists and filmmakers as a producer to gather new influences for my writing.
This year, I have written an album of production music to be released with MediaTracks. The music is a combination of reflective piano motifs and atmospheric textures, underpinned by rhythms marking change and development – perfect for storytelling. This album and my endeavours in production music would not be possible without Quarry Music, who have given me the opportunity to explore this industry and find my place in it. I have been interviewed as a professional composer and pitched bespoke compositions for advertising due to the pathway Quarry Music has laid out for me, and I am very grateful for their continued support.
